Car Insurance in Windsor

Whether you drive, lease or own a vehicle in Ontario, you need to have valid car insurance. If you don’t carry one with you, you can get fined up to $50,000. In addition, your driver’s license may be suspended, and your car impounded. If that’s not enough, insurers may label you as “high-risk” and either charge you a high premium or decline insuring you altogether.

There are other consequences too. For instance, if you cause a car accident, you may have to pay for your medical, repair and similar expenses out of pocket. Conversely, if you end up in a car accident through no fault of your own, you won’t be able to sue the at-fault driver for compensation or receive income replacement or non-earner benefits. In other words, a car accident can cost you a fortune even if you exclude all legal repercussions.

So, if you’re looking for car insurance, consult one (or all) of the following:

  • An insurance broker. Someone who sells car insurance on behalf of multiple insurance companies.
  • An insurance agent. Someone who sells car insurance from a single company.
  • A direct writer. Someone who sells their own insurance services.
  • A quote comparison website. An online tool that allows you to compare auto insurance rates from multiple insurers at once. An example of this is RATESDOTCA, which you can use to find the cheapest rate in your area.

Who regulates car insurance in Windsor?

The Financial Services Regulatory Authority of Ontario (FSRA) is the governing body that oversees the insurance industry in Windsor (and the rest of Ontario). It makes sure that insurers follow the appropriate legal guidelines and deliver fair rates to all Ontarians.

  • Which neighbourhoods have the most expensive car insurance in Windsor? Postal codes starting with N8T, N8X, N8Y, N9A, N9B and N9C have the most expensive car insurance in Windsor, with the average rate being $1,611 per year, or $134 per month. These areas are located at the core of Windsor. They are more urbanized and have higher traffic density, which usually leads to more accidents – and more expensive insurance rates.
  • Which neighbourhoods have the cheapest car insurance in Windsor? Postal codes starting with N8N, N8V, N9E, N9J and N9K have the cheapest car insurance in Windsor, with the average rate of $1,383 per year, and $115 per month. How much will Windsor car insurance cost in the future?

Insurance rates have had a significant dip during the pandemic, as fewer people were driving when the lockdown was in place. This resulted in fewer accidents and fewer claims filed. However, since more drivers are now out on the roads, 2023 is poised to see a significant rise in insurance rates.

In fact, many insurers have applied for rate increases in 2022. Because of that, some policyholders may already be paying higher rates than they were last year (or the year before). We expect the rates to increase by 5% in the first quarter of 2023 and by 7%-8% in the second quarter. Third and fourth quarters should see similar increases.

With the average annual rate of $1,491, Windsor has some of the cheapest premiums in Ontario, especially when compared to those in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA). Depending on your personal factors (such as age, car, driving record and neighbourhood), your actual annual premium may be below or above that.  If it’s significantly higher, it may be due to a poor driving record, lack of experience or a similar issue, as most neighbourhoods in Windsor have relatively cheap insurance.

Factors that affect your Windsor car insurance premium

Aside from location, there are other factors that determine your car insurance rate. Some play a bigger role than others, depending on your demographic. Here’s what they are:

  • Driving record: If you’ve accumulated a sizeable amount of traffic tickets and have gotten into several accidents, for which you needed to file claims, your insurance premiums will be expensive. Even if your record has traffic tickets only, your premiums may still be high, as the more infractions you have, the greater your likelihood of getting into an accident. At least, statistically speaking.
  • Age: If you’re below the age of 25, expect to pay a lot for your car insurance. Young drivers are statistically more likely to get into an accident than their older counterparts, which is why they have to pay more. In fact, according to the Traffic Injury Research Foundation, over 700 young people are killed in road crashes each year in Canada, while 50,000 end up injured.
  • Sex: If you’re a male under 25, then you have to contend with another statistic – that male drivers are more likely to speed, drive while intoxicated and neglect safety rules than female drivers – at least according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). This means that male drivers under 25 must pay some of the highest premiums. The good news is that age and sex become less relent as drivers become older and more skilled. So, you’ll just have to wait this one out.
  • Driving experience: The more you drive, the more experienced you become. This leads to lower premiums, as experience reduces your chances of getting into an accident. Note that driving experience is not tied to your age. Instead, it’s tied to the number of years you have on your driving record. More years equals more experience. Just be sure to keep that driving record clean to avoid premium increases.
  • Vehicle: Your insurance rate also depends on the car you drive. For instance, if the car is more likely to get stolen or end up in a collision, then your premium will be higher. Every car of every year, make and model has a Canadian Loss Experience Automobile Rating (CLEAR), determined by how likely it is to have a claim filed for it (for any reason).

Tips on how to get cheap car insurance in Windsor

There are ways to make your car insurance cheaper. However, they may require some effort on your part. Here’s what they are:

  • Drive carefully: Keep your driving record clean! Don’t speed or drive under the influence of alcohol or other substances. Wear your seatbelt and follow all the driving rules. Remember, the more traffic tickets you accumulate, the higher your premium will be.
  • Don’t overspend on your coverage: Purchase only the coverage you need. If the basic coverage is good enough for you, then there’s no need to add to it, especially if you’re strapped for cash.
  • Make timely payments: Late fees contribute to your premiums. If you want to pay less, pay on time.
  • Bundle multiple policies: Bundle your car insurance with your home or tenant insurance to receive a bundling discount. If you own other vehicles, such as a motorcycle or an RV, include them in this package as well.
  • Stay with one company: By staying with the same insurance provider for multiple years in a row, you can secure a loyalty discount. So, don’t switch, unless you really, really have to.
  • Buy the right car: Consider purchasing a car that scores high in crash tests and has low theft ratings. Remember, the more likely the car is to end up damaged or lost, the more expensive your insurance premium will be.
  • Make your car safer: Add safety features to your car, such as an alarm system, winter tires, anti-lock brakes and driver assist, to reduce the likelihood of theft and accidents.
  • Consider usage-based insurance (UBI): By installing a device on your vehicle that tracks your driving habits (including how you brake, turn and accelerate), you can significantly reduce your premiums. However, you must be a careful driver for this to pay off.
  • Move elsewhere: Your location plays a huge role in determining your insurance premiums. Areas with high crime rates and dense traffic increase the likelihood of theft, vandalism and accidents. That’s why cities in the GTA have some of the highest premiums in Ontario. Since Windsor is not part of the GTA, it’s comparatively cheap. However, some Windsor neighbourhoods have cheaper insurance than others.
  • Take driving lessons: By taking government-certified driving courses, you will not only become a better driver but decrease your premiums. That’s because drivers who’ve taken courses are less likely to file a claim.
  • Keep practicing: Drive regularly, so you build your driving record and become a better driver. Practice makes perfect, as they say. It also happens to lower your insurance premiums – provided your driving record stays clean.
  • Compare quotes: Use quote comparison websites like RATESDOTCA to receive quotes from multiple insurers at once and secure the cheapest premium in your area.

Frequently asked questions about car insurance in Windsor

Need more information on Windsor car insurance? We got you covered.

Which company has the cheapest car insurance in Windsor?

Given how insurance premiums are determined, there is no easy way to pinpoint which company offers the cheapest one – in Windsor or anywhere else. That’s because insurance rates depend heavily on individualized factors such as age, car, location and driving record.

You can, however, use comparison websites like RATESDOTCA to compare quotes from multiple different insurers at once to get the cheapest price in your location.

Can I get month-to-month car insurance in Windsor?

No. Most providers in Windsor and the rest of Ontario offer year-long insurance policies only, though some are known for providing six-month policies. If you’re looking for a policy shorter than six months, you probably won’t find it.

However, there are ways around this issue. Here’s what you can do:

  • Rent a car: If you’re visiting Windsor for a short time, you can rent a car and get insurance that covers the length of your booking. That way, if you rent a car for three days, your insurance policy will last three days as well. However, this may prove costly if you decide to stay in Windsor longer (e.g. a month). In this case, you’d need a different solution.
  • Use your existing policy: If your stay in Windsor is on the longer side, you can use your existing policy to cover the car you intend to drive here. That way, it will match the amount of days you’re planning to stay, while costing you less than renting a car.
  • Change your policy: If you live in Windsor and you want month-to-month car insurance, you can reduce your existing coverage to make it cheaper – particularly during the months you drive the least (or don’t drive at all). It won’t be month-to-month insurance, but it will cost you less.

Does my car insurance cover me in the U.S.?

Yes, your car insurance covers you in the U.S., across all 50 states, because insurance laws and regulations in the U.S. are similar to those in Canada. However, we recommend that you increase your coverage limits, particularly for liability, as you’re more at risk of a lawsuit there than here. The standard minimum liability coverage is $200,000. Consider increasing it to $2 million when travelling.

Is ridesharing insurance available in Windsor?

Yes. However, before using your vehicle for ridesharing, inform your insurance provider, just in case.

The FSRA has a list of all approved ridesharing companies in Ontario, along with their corresponding insurers. Here’s what they are:

How ridesharing insurance works: Whenever a driver, car owner or passenger uses any of the above-listed ridesharing services, they are covered the moment the app is on. As soon as it’s off, the car owner’s personal insurance kicks in.

How much can raising my car insurance deductible save me on insurance?

When you buy insurance for your car, you can choose your deductible amount. We recommend that you base this amount on your coverage and/or financial situation. Most drivers in Windsor have a $500 deductible, as it’s the standard amount offered by insurers.

You can raise it to $1,000 or even $2,000, if you prefer, which may save you up to 40% or more on your coverage.

However, you want to be careful when raising your deductible, since the higher the deductible, the more you have to pay yourself in case of an accident. This may negate any savings you make on your premiums. In addition, when filing a claim, your deductible may cost you more than paying for the damages out of pocket.
