About belairdirect

Named after the 1950s vehicle Chevrolet Bel Air, belairdirect has been selling car insurance since 1955. Though it was founded in Quebec, it was acquired by Intact Financial Corporation (IFC) in 1989 and now serves over 900,000 customers across Canada, including Ontario. It has about 1,450 employees both inside and outside the country, working alongside more than 10 other IFC-owned brands.

An industry innovator, belairdirect continuously endeavours to streamline the customer experience through new technologies and initiatives. In fact, in 1997, it became the first car insurance provider in North America to offer quotes online. In 2017, it also launched a mobile app to further expand its online experience. Its ‘Little Knight’ mascot, introduced in 2011, has become almost synonymous with the brand – similarly to GEICO’s Gecko mascot. In addition, belairdirect markets itself as being flexible on price, offering competitive rates alongside a wide range of discounts, bundles and rewards.

Ways of saving with belairdirect

Given that one of belairdirect’s primary directives is to help customers save money, regardless of their coverage, it offers several options that will let you do just that, including:

automerit

This mobile service is part of belairdirect's usage-based insurance solution. When the app is activated, it monitors your driving habits in real time, including your acceleration, speed, turning and braking, allowing belairdirect to offer you a personalized premium whenever your auto policy renews.

The safer you drive, the more you will save on your premiums – up to 25%. Note that the opposite is possible as well – if you’re a risky driver, your premiums will go up.

Multi-vehicle discount

By insuring all your household’s vehicles under belairdirect, you can secure a multi-vehicle discount of up to 15%.

Car and home insurance bundling

If you’re looking to insure both your home and car, it’s always a good idea to do so under the same insurer. You will not only be able to save time by dealing with one company but save money as well. With belairdirect, you can save up to 10% on your home insurance and up to 20% on your car insurance.

Insurance for 50+

If you’re over 50 years old, you might just have a decent driving record and tons of driving experience. You might also be a proud homeowner. Or both. If so, belairdirect can help you make sure your insurance premiums don’t increase as you age via its special suite of products and rates, including:

  • Waiver of deductible: In the event of a total loss or a hit-and-run, belairdirect will waive up to $1,000 of your deductible.
  • No obligation to rebuild: Should your home become completely lost, you can choose to receive its replacement-cost value without having to rebuild your home, letting you choose what to do next.
  • Accident forgiveness: If your driving history is spotless, belairdirect will ‘forgive’ your first at-fault accident by keeping your premium the same upon policy renewal.
  • S.O.S. identity theft protection: If you end up becoming a victim of identity theft, belairdirect may reimburse you up to $25,000 for the costs tied to restoring your identity. With an additional identity theft endorsement, you could save up to 50% in total. Furthermore, there is no deductible when making a claim via this service.

Insurance for young families and couples

If you and your partner are between the ages of 18 and 35, then you’re considered to be a young couple – whether you live together, planning to live together, married or planning to get married. belairdirect will work with you to ensure you get the best coverage to meet your needs for the lowest cost possible. To get started, belairdirect suggests exploring the following options:

  • Tenant insurance
  • Insurance bundling
  • Multi-vehicle insurance

Group program

If you are a group member with belairdirect, either as an employee or a member, you can access even more savings, including the ability to combine discounts and partake in contests with special prizes.

Student insurance

One of belairdirect’s major aims is to demystify home and car insurance by helping students choose the best coverage for their needs – and save money in the process. Its agents are trained to work closely with students to accommodate their various lifestyles, age groups and challenges.

belairdirect online services

Given that belairdirect has been one of the first insurance companies to offer online services in North America, it now has a full suite of online capabilities, including:

  • Claim submissions: You can submit and track claims 24/7 in just a few clicks (or taps) via either belairdirect’s online Client Centre or mobile app.
  • Client Centre: Using belairdirect’s Client Centre, you can access all of your insurance documents, request roadside assistance, add a driver to your policy, update your home address, submit and track claims 24/7, procure your digital proof of insurance and save your license plate.
  • Mobile app: with belairdirect’s mobile app, you can utilize the same functionalities as those found in the Client Centre, but on the go. This includes access to policy management, documents, billing, claims, digital proof of insurance and roadside assistance (if it’s included in your coverage). You can further enhance this experience with automerit – belairdirect's usage-based solution.
  • Roadside assistance: If you require roadside assistance, you can access it either via belairdirect’s Client Centre or mobile app.

Other insurance products belairdirect has to offer

Though belairdirect is best known for its car insurance, that’s not all it has to offer. It also offers:

Home insurance

You can get coverage for your property from belairdirect if you live in Ontario, Quebec, Alberta or British Columbia. As is the case with car insurance, there are plenty of discounts and benefits for every kind of home and homeowner.

belairdirect provides the following types of home insurance:

  • Homeowner insurance: If you own a duplex, triplex or detached home, belairdirect will protect both your property and belongings.
  • Condo insurance: Like the homeowner insurance, this will cover your property – meaning the condo unit – and personal belongings.
  • Tenant insurance: Since many landlords require tenant insurance, it’s often unavoidable – whether you’re renting an apartment or a house. Unlike condo or homeowner insurance, tenant insurance covers your personal belongings only, as the unit itself will be protected by the landlord’s insurance.

Seasonal insurance

Seasonal insurance is like car insurance, except that it covers recreational or ‘seasonal’ vehicles, such as snowmobiles, ATVs, fifth wheels and travel trailers. Vehicles like these usually spend a decent chunk of time in storage – until the appropriate time of year warrants their usage. Fortunately, belairdirect's coverage accounts for this, meaning that you won’t have to cancel your insurance when you’re done enjoying your recreational vehicle. The benefit of this is that while the vehicle is in storage, it’s still protected from perils such as fire or theft.

What can I do if my auto insurance premium at belairdirect is going up?

If your belairdirect insurance premium is going up, there are several routes you can take to secure a cheaper rate. While not all of the factors affecting your insurance are under your control, such as new government regulations or inflation, plenty of them are.

With that in mind, here’s what you can do to save money on your auto insurance at belairdirect:

  • Compare auto insurance quotes online using websites like RATESDOTCA. After all, belairdirect’s rate may not be the cheapest one on the market, so it’s best to check out other insurers to ensure you’re getting the best price possible.
  • Increase your deductible to $1,000 or higher to lower your premium. Remember, if you do this, you’ll have to pay more out of pocket should your vehicle suffer major damage or loss.
  • Cut down on unnecessary add-ons, so you only pay for the coverage that will actually benefit you, not waste your money.
  • Drive responsibly and safely to avoid getting traffic tickets or getting into accidents, keeping your driving record clean and your history claim-free.
  • Bundle your car and home insurance coverages together under one provider to not only simplify your payment process but lower your premiums – in some cases, by almost a quarter of the overall cost.
  • Buy a new vehicle that scores high in crash tests and has low theft ratings. Vehicles of every year, make and model have their own Canadian Loss Experience Automobile Rating (CLEAR), which indicates how expensive it will be to insure. When shopping for a vehicle, take this rating into account.
  • Make your car safer and less likely to be lost or damaged for one reason or another by implementing safety features like winter tires, anti-lock brakes, driver assist and an anti-theft alarm system. Doing so will significantly reduce the likelihood of having to file a claim, lowering your premiums in the long term.
  • Enroll in driving courses to not only become a better driver but decrease your premiums, since you will signal to belairdirect and other insurers that you’re less likely to get into an accident or file a claim.
  • Pay on time to save money on late fees and lower your insurance premiums.
  • Move, if you can, as some areas have more expensive premiums than others due to factors such as crime rates and traffic density. Check out how expensive your area is using the RATESDOTCA Insuramap.
  • Consider belairdirect’s automerit mobile service, which will track your driving habits via your mobile device, thereby helping you lower your premiums upon policy renewal – if you’re deemed a safe driver. Note that your premium may go up if your driving habits turn out to be too risky.
