Should You Be Banking in Only One Place?

A young man and woman look at their finances and smile happily

Banking is now more convenient and accessible than ever. Even before the pandemic, customers had options. They could bank online, through a mobile app, or in the branch. This variety provides more flexible opportunities to compare money products and services when it suits each customer the most.

Often, you can get the best deals by shopping around. By doing this, you may be able to score the best interest rates or promotions. But it can also lead to multiple accounts, paperwork and an organizational nightmare.

Sometimes, banking packages offer everything you need with added convenience. So, should you be banking in only one place?

Here are the top three benefits of banking packages:

  1. Save on fees. Usually, if you maintain a minimum balance in your account, the monthly fee is waived. Also, you may have access to unlimited transactions or money transfers—saving you on transaction charges.
  2. Freedom and flexibility. Generally, banking packages allow you to select specific products that suit your needs, like credit cards, savings accounts and investment products. You may even be able to use some banking products or features for free, like trading stocks.
  3. Extra perks. Some banking packages now offer rewards for your everyday purchases using debit. Although you may be able to earn more rewards through your credit card, it is a bonus. Additional perks may include a safety deposit box, overdraft protection, higher interest rates on savings accounts, or annual fee waivers on credit cards.

When shopping around for a great bank account, you should look for a few simple details.

  1. Transactions. Does the account offer unlimited transactions? If not, how many does it provide and are there additional benefits that outweigh this factor?
  2. Fees. What are the monthly fees? If you maintain a minimum balance, can you have these waived? Is the minimum balance too high? Are there other fees for e-transfers or ATM withdrawals?
  3. Features and rewards. Does the account provide extra incentives, interest rates or rewards?
  4. Rebates and waivers. Sometimes, banking packages provide ongoing annual fee waivers on credit cards, which is a great way to access top tier credit cards without the cost. However, some offer an annual fee waiver or rebate for the first year. So, you will have to consider if the annual fee suits your lifestyle long term.
  5. Convenience. Can you access your banking online or speak to a representative easily? Is the account compatible with contactless payment options?

Overall, if you have the extra funds to leave your minimum balance in the account, a banking package won’t cost you a monthly fee and may provide additional perks or exceptional interest rates. However, comparing packages and products is never a bad idea. It may be a little less convenient, but you could get a great value by mixing and matching products from many different financial institutions. But who says you can’t have both? A banking package can be a great home base.
