Who would have thought that sales for some of Canada’s best-selling SUVs would have grown during a pandemic? Such was the case for four out of 10 vehicles that topped the list for annual SUV sales in 2020. Heck, there was even a new SUV introduced to the market, the Kia Seltos, that cracked the top 10 doing better in sales than most of the top-selling cars. Impressive.

Canada’s top-selling SUVs in 2020

The Toyota RAV4 gained ground on its closest competitor, the Honda CR-V in 2020. While RAV4 sales grew despite the COVID-19 pandemic, the CR-V’s shrank.

Rank SUV Make and Model 2020 Sales 2019 Sales % Change
1 Toyota RAV4 67,977 65,248 4.18

Even though the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V are popular with drivers, which SUVs can you anticipate having the cheapest car insurance rate? The answer may come as a surprise.

SUVs ranked on the cheapest for auto insurance

The new kid on the market, the Kia Seltos, came back with some of the best prices. How do the remaining nine SUVs stack up? It’s fair to say that most seem to come in the middle of the road.

Rank SUV Make & Model Premium Scale: 1 (cheapest) to 10 (expensive)
1. Kia Seltos 4.3
2. Hyundai Kona 4.5
3. Jeep Wrangler 4.6
4. Subaru Crosstrek 5.1
5. Ford Escape 5.2
6. Mazda CX-5 5.5
7. Hyundai Tucson 5.5
8. Honda CR-V 5.9
9. Nissan Rogue 6.4
10. Toyota RAV4 6.5

In comparison, Canada’s best-selling car, the Honda Civic comes in at 8.6 on the scale, while the nation’s best-loved pickup truck, the Ford F-series, sits at 3.4.

Factors that affect your auto insurance rates

It’s no secret; there’s a lot that goes into the auto insurance rate you pay.

There are details like where you live, your driving and insurance history, and your driving record. There’s also the type of vehicle you drive. Your choice of vehicle matters because some are involved in more claims (whether it’s collision-related or theft, for example) or are prone to have higher claims costs. It’s a numbers game, and every insurer has its own ‘playbook’ to go by, and the numbers will vary. That is why it’s important to keep in mind that the vehicle that costs you the least to insure may not be the auto that’s the cheapest choice for someone else.

SUVs ranked on the cheapest on fuel

The cost of fuel is an ongoing expense that, at first, you wouldn’t think amounts to much. The costs over a year, however, add up quickly. The reality is, you likely fork over as much on fuel each year as you do on your auto insurance. And although the pandemic has forced many of us to park our vehicles — thus reducing how much we spend on fuel — it’s still important to plan for the day when we will be able to take to the open road again.

The SUVs were ranked, this time, on the highest part of the fuel cost range that you could expect to spend each year. The best-in-class on this ranking is the Honda CR-V. That said, it’s worth noting that if you go the hybrid route (which typically costs more than the gas-powered alternative), it looks like you’ll be saving in the neighbourhood of $600-$700 in gas money annually.

Rank Model Estimated Annual Fuel Cost*
1. Honda CR-V $1,740 - $1,831
2. Hyundai Kona $1,785 - $1,944
3. Toyota RAV4 $1,356 (the hybrid) - $1,944
4. Kia Seltos $1,740 - $1,966
5. Nissan Rogue $1,808 - $1,966
6. Ford Escape $1,311 (the hybrid) - $2,057
7. Subaru Crosstrek $1,763 - $2,124
8. Mazda CX-5 $1,921 - $2,237
9. Hyundai Tuscon $2,057 - $2,283
10. Jeep Wrangler $2,109 - $2,735

Premium scale methodology

For model year vehicles 2020 and 2021, we applied a scale of one through 10 where one represents the cheapest car insurance rate out of 30 of Canada’s top sellers (including cars and pickup trucks), and 10 represents the most expensive. The premium scale rankings are based on real quotes by real people who shopped their rate at RATESDOTCA and connected with a provider to discuss the quote they received. Only quotes for Ontario car insurance were reviewed as coverage can vary between provinces, and by limiting it to one province, you have a more accurate apples-to-apples comparison. Results may vary based on your circumstances.

* Annual estimated fuel cost is based on driving 20,000 km per year — a typically realistic distance for the vast majority of Canadians — at fuel prices that are estimated to be $1.13/L for regular, $1.35/L for premium, and $1.11/L for diesel. This information comes from Natural Resources Canada's Fuel Ratings Tool and does not include the costs associated with driving a plug-in hybrid electric model or battery electric vehicle. Keep in mind that consumption varies within a model due to options chosen when the car is purchased, as well as how you drive, traffic, and road conditions.
