RBC Survey Shows 2013 RRSP Rebound with Increasing Contributions

About 6 in 10 Canadians now own RRSP accounts, up 5% from 2012 and the average planned contribution has increased by $500.

The 24th Annual RBC RRSP poll, conducted by Ipsos Reid, indicates that contributions for 2013 are up to an average of $4,653 and the top three investments are still mutual funds (43%), savings accounts (22%) and GICs or term deposits (20%). Also, 23% plan to contribute the maximum allowable sum.

Interestingly, 50% of younger Canadian adults, those aged 18 to 34, have RRSP accounts, which represents a 10% jump from 2012. In addition, this group's average contribution is now $4,329 for 2013, up 39% from 2012.

One-third of Canadians contribute regularly with 61% making deposits either weekly, biweekly, or monthly.  One fourth make one-time yearly contributions and 10% of respondents say they do so whenever they have the money.
