Car Insurance FAQ

Answers to most common questions for car insurance applications.

Which insurance companies' rates do you compare?

We compare rates for over 30 insurance companies: Aviva, Chieftain, Coachman, Echelon, Economical, Gore, Intact, Jevco, North Waterloo Farmers Mutual, Northbridge, Optimum, Pafco, Peel Mutual, Peace Hills, Pembridge, Perth, Portage, Royal & Sun Alliance (RSA), Scottish & York, SGI Canada, South Easthope Farmers Mutual, Traders General, Unica and Wawanesa.

Are the rates I'm quoted accurate?

As long as the information that you've provided as part of the application is accurate the rate you're quoted should not change once you speak to the insurance broker. However, when the broker verifies your driving history, if there are any discrepancies, your rate could change.

I'm interested in a quote. How do I proceed?

If you're interested in a particular quote simply click on the "Get Rate" button beside it. You will then be promoted to fill out your contact information in order to be contact by the broker offering that specific quote.

How do I retrieve a previously completed quote?

To retrieve a previously completed quote go the car Insurance page and click on "Retrieve Existing Quote" under the "GET QUOTES!" button. You will be promoted to enter your email address so we can send you an email with a link to retrieve your quote. Once you receive the email simply click on the link and you'll be directed to your previous quote.

Why did I not get any quotes?

You did not receive any quotes if based on your driving profile our providers are unable to provide you with an online quote. If this happens you will want to speak with a licensed insurance representative.

I don't know my postal code. What should I enter?

A valid postal code is required in order to obtain an accurate quote. Rates may change based on the postal code entered. If you're not sure what your postal code is you can use the Canada Post Find a Postal Code service to look it up.

My vehicle is not listed. What do I do?

Our database should contain all available vehicles. However if you cannot locate it please choose the closest comparable model. Please keep in mind that the rate of the comparable model could be different.

I can't remember certain details regarding my driving history. What do I do?

Try to fill out the application to the best of your ability. Once you speak to one of our partner insurance brokers they will be able to verify your driving history and update the information if needed.

Can I be notified of future rate changes?

Certainly. Simply complete an auto insurance quote and we will automatically notify you whenever the cost of the policy decreases.

My policy is expiring at a later date. How can I utilize your service?

Rates.ca can be used by all, those ready to buy car insurance and those simply shopping around. Even if your policy is expiring at a later date use our site to get a good sense of what you could be paying elsewhere. You can also sign up for our Renewal Service to get a notification email from us ahead of your policy expiry date.

If you are considering a specific quote simply fill out your contact information in order to be contacted by a licenced insurance representative. He/she can advise you and help you choose a policy which best meets your needs.
