No one plans to get stranded without gas or to lock their keys in the car. But it happens — often at the most inconvenient time. Not to mention the pesky way Canadian winters can interfere, draining your car’s battery or wedging your vehicle in the snow.

Roadside assistance can help cover the unexpected costs of emergency roadside services, whether you need winching out of mud or a snowbank, or fuel delivery.

What is roadside assistance?

A roadside assistance program connects drivers with towing and other emergency services free of charge or at a discounted rate under a plan, usually an annual membership. For instance, if your car breaks down at the side of the road or you have a flat tire, you can call your roadside assistance company for help, and they will send a tow truck at no additional cost.

However, there are some restrictions. Most companies have a kilometre radius for repairs, meaning they will take you to the closest service centre within a certain distance. There may be other exclusions, like the cost of labour and parts, or a tire change if a spare is not readily available. It is beneficial to read the terms and conditions of any program before you need to use it to avoid unwelcome surprises.

Many drivers will purchase roadside assistance through an auto manufacturer, an association, or a financial institution. However, there is one more option: your credit card. Roadside assistance is a rare feature offered by only a handful of cards — for free to cardholders.

Here are the best credit cards with complimentary roadside assistance.

**The RATESDOTCA Best of Finance methodology assumes the cardholder spends an average of $2,000 a month on their card to determine the first-year value. The calculation includes all welcome bonuses and promotional offers at the time of publishing.
