About RATESDOTCA

Our vision

A marketplace that allows Canadians to freely choose the best insurance or financial provider for their needs.

Our mission

To give Canadians the necessary tools and expertise to make smart insurance and finance decisions.

Who we are

We are RATESDOTCA, Canada’s largest digital marketplace for insurance and financial services. We offer dynamic and accurate rate information, intuitive tools and expert advice – to help you find the best services for the lowest price.

We know that shopping for insurance and financial services is never fun. That’s why our goal is to make it easy.

Using our online tools, you can search the entire market and compare rates on car, home, life and travel insurance, mortgage and credit cards. All it takes is a few clicks to get matched with a range of quotes from Canada’s top providers – the brands you know and trust – and only a glance to discover the best rate for your specific needs.

To help you along on this journey, we abide by the following principles:

  • Keep it simple. Insurance and finances are complicated enough. That’s why our site aims to make things as simple as possible. All you need to do is fill out a form and pick the best rate from dozens of providers. No need to go to other sites or conduct extensive research. If you already have coverage, no worries – we can help you find a better one.
  • Provide useful advice, no matter what. Our experts in the insurance and finance fields ensure that the advice we provide is both sound and practical – whether it’s provided in person or through our online content. We want you to get the exact answers you’re looking for, so you can start saving today.
  • Adhere to strict editorial standards. Our editorial team is here to ensure that all the content you consume on this website, including all the data, is thoroughly vetted by experts and only provides the information you seek. See our editorial policy to learn more.

Canada’s first choice

Headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, we’ve been serving Canadians in this industry for over 20 years. In that time, we have built a network of over 50 partners, which allows our shoppers to compare a bigger portion of the market than anywhere else in Canada. And yes, we are wholly Canadian.

Furthermore, we don’t just offer comprehensive product comparisons, but also educational content, industry news, financial tools like calculators, renewal reminders and more, all of which are designed to help our customers find the best insurance rates, mortgage rates, credit cards and banking products.

That’s what makes us one of the most beloved rate comparison destinations in the country.

Our core values

  • We are experts. We know the industry inside out, and we strive relentlessly to stay on top of the latest insurance market rates and trends.
  • We are transparent. We always help our customers save money on insurance, even if it means getting insurance elsewhere.
  • We are supportive. We are friendly, approachable and responsive – both toward each other and our customers.
  • We are honest. We always speak candidly, and our actions are consistent with our words. We work vigorously to earn and keep customer trust.
  • We put customers first. We do our best to tailor our approach, products and service to our customers’ unique needs.

The history of RATESDOTCA

RATESDOTCA was founded under the name of Kanetix in 1999. It was one of the first online tools to allow Canadians to generate multiple car insurance quotes at once, initially aimed at younger, internet-savvy drivers – the most likely demographic to search for cheap online quotes at the time.

Early growth

Throughout the 2000s, Kanetix expanded into other parts of the country, including Quebec, Alberta and the Atlantic Provinces. It also introduced property and life insurance quoters, complementing its already robust auto insurance offering. A decade later, it received a significant investment from a private equity firm, which allowed the company to kick off its greatest growth spurt yet.

Growth in the 2010s

The 2010s saw Kanetix grow more than ever before. It expanded into new markets, such as mortgage and credit cards, and acquired several industry-leading companies, including RateSupermarket.ca and Rates.ca. This decade also marked the launch of the Auto and Home Insuramap, a tool that lets customers view premiums by postal code.

Rebrand and new partnerships

In 2020, Kanetix rebranded itself to RATESDOTCA, merging with RateSupermarket.ca and moving to the Rates.ca domain, where it remains to this day.

Kanetix and Ratesupermarket become RATESDOTCA

How we make money

Our tools show competitive rates and information, which are available to our customers free of charge. We are compensated by our partners when you connect with them through our site for the products you find online. Learn more about how we get paid.
